Vikings Struggle at the Plate in Losses to Hendrix

The Berry lineup combined for just 11 hits across two games in Saturday's doubleheader against Hendrix in Southern Athletic Association play on the road, losing by scores of 4-1 and 4-3.

Game One: Hendrix 4, Berry 1
The Warriors (24-7, 9-5) were the beneficiaries of stand-out pitching all day long, as they silenced the nation's leading hitting team, holding the Vikings (21-11, 10-4) to one run on four hits in the opening game of the series. The lone run for the Vikings came in the top of the fifth inning after an error allowed Joey Garcia to score from third, making the score 1-0.

Hendrix would plate four to counteract the run scored in the top of the frame with four runs of their own. That would be the only blemish on the box score for right-hander Patrick O'Rourke who exited following the big inning for the Warriors. O'Rourke fanned three over his five innings of work before turning it over to Will Macolino who would permit just one batter to reach base safely in his three scoreless innings from the pen.

Jack Poist, Wesley Wade, Trace Cate, and Joey Garcia were the only Vikings to register a hit in game one.

Game Two: Berry 3, Hendrix 4 (7)

Just as in game one, the Vikings were the first to score in game two, as Wesley Wade tallied his then team-high 13th double of 2022. Andrew Pendleton's 36th RBI of the season would come a few pitches later as he singled through the right side to give the Vikings the early 1-0 advantage.

Trailing 4-1 in the top of the fourth, Wade would then register his 14th two-bagger of the season and come in to score his second run of the game after an RBI sacrifice fly from Joey Garcia.

With the game hanging in the balance in the top of the seventh, Garcia doubled to open the frame. A walk and a single from John D'Amelio and Levi Cloud respectively would not only plate the third run of the game, but also put the game-tying just 90 feet away. The valiant effort would unfortunately come up a run short, as the Vikings fell 4-3 in seven innings.

The Vikings will look to salvage the final game of the series in Conway, Ark., Sunday at 1 p.m. EDT.
