MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - After being humbled in game one of a Southern Athletic Association baseball doubleheader 13-3, Berry returned the favor in game two as the Vikings took the nightcap 16-0 to even the weekend series against the visitors.
Game One: Rhodes 13, Berry 3 (7 Innings)
Not much went right for the Vikings in game one as the Lynx scored five runs over the first three innings en route to a 13-3 victory in a shortened contest.
Down 5-0 in the bottom of the third,
Jack Poist drove in Berry's first run as his sacrifice fly scored
Zachary Hardee. As Berry tried to crawl back into it, Rhodes pushed father away. A pair of two-run hits in the sixth stretched the lead to 9-1. Then in the seventh, a passed ball, a two-run single, and a sacrifice fly helped the Lynx to a 13-1 lead.
Berry nearly extended the game into an eighth inning as
Wesley Wade's two-run single made it 13-3. The Vikings would load the bases in the inning, but couldn't draw any closer as Rhodes took the win in the opener.
Nick Ferazzi took the win for Rhodes with six strong innings on the mound, while
Patrick O'Rourke was saddled with the loss for BC.
Game Two: Berry 16, Rhodes 0
If the offense struggled for Berry in game one, it flourished in game two. The Vikings scored in every inning they came to the plate, eventually settling for a 16-0 victory.
Andrew Pendleton started the scoring with an RBI single in the home half of the first. In the second,
Joey Garcia launched a solo homer well over the wall in left center to make it 2-0. A bases loaded infield hit for Wade and a two-run single back up the middle for
John Poist made it 5-0 after six outs.
Jack Poist's two-run triple in the third made it 7-0, with a wild pitch an inning later helping the Vikings make it a lead of eight. Another four-spot went on the board in the fifth. An RBI double off the bat of
Trevor Barron made it 9-0, with a wild pitch bringing in the 10th run one batter later.
John Poist made it a three-RBI contest as he singled to score Barron and make it 11-0. A wild pitch later in the frame let pinch runner Jaidon Stowers score to give the Vikings a dozen runs.
An error with two men out in the sixth allowed the Vikings (24-12, 12-5 SAA) to eventually plate four runs in their final at-bat, with one run scoring on a bases loaded hit by pitch and another coming in on a bases loaded walk.
The remaining drama in the contest would be whether
Ethan Crump could complete the shutout on his own. After 97 pitches and with the bases full of Lynx (21-13-1, 11-6 SAA), Crump would leave to a standing ovation from the Berry denizens.
Koby Dunn would get a fly out one batter later to finish a combined shutout, the first of the year for Berry, as the Vikings took the 16-0 victory.
The two teams will meet again Saturday at 1 p.m., with Senior Day festivities for the Vikings taking place prior to first pitch.
