Vikings Shutout Rhodes, Take Series Win

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - Freshman hurler Jackson Halla was nearly untouchable in his complete game shutout of visiting Rhodes College Saturday, as Berry took a 10-0 victory to win the rubber game of the Southern Athletic Association series.

The Vikings were locked in from the start as the first three batters in the order all reached base safely with base hits. Doubles from Jack Poist and Wesley Wade with a single from Spence Johns sandwiched inbetween would score the game's first three runs. For Wade, the double would set the single season record for doubles with 16, a mark that would be one-upped later in the contest.

Blake Hyman's day at the plate began with a line drive single to left in the second inning. After swiping second base, Hyman would come around to score following the second single of the day from Spence Johns for the fifth-year's 34th RBI of the season.

The 4-0 lead in favor of the Vikings would remain until the bottom of the fifth when two more runs would cross the plate. Johns' third hit of the game led off the inning and was followed-up by the 17th double of the season from Wade. A sacrifice fly from John Poist and an RBI single from shortstop Levi Cloud would bring both runners in to score.

Hits from Spence Johns became a recurring theme in today's ballgame as the graduate student went 4-4 on senior day with his final base knock coming in the sixth inning, scoring Zachary Hardee to put the Vikings up by a touchdown. A combination of walks and errors on behalf of the Lynx loaded the bases in the seventh inning. A Joey Garcia double would put the nail in the coffin as three runs would cross the plate in the inning thus bringing the run-rule into play.

The final line from a career-defining start from Jackson Halla read seven innings pitched, no runs, no walks, three hits, and one strikeout. Halla's seven-inning effort comes one day after a combined shutout from Ethan Crump (6.2 innings) and Koby Dunn (0.1 IP). In all, the Vikings held the Lynx scoreless over the final 14 innings of the series and out-scored their foes 23-0.

Johns finished a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Both Wade and Hyman turned in multi-hit performances.

With just one weekend remaining in the regular season, the Vikings will travel to Birmingham, Ala., to take on the first-place Panthers of Birmingham Southern. The three-game set will commence on Friday at 6 p.m. CDT.
