Box Score LaGrange, Ga. - Hot off a three-win weekend at the Millsaps Baseball Classic, the Berry College baseball team found itself in a war of attrition Tuesday night at LaGrange. In the end, it was a 14-hit performance from the Panthers that solidified a win at home by a final score of 12-9.
A double and two-base throwing error brought Berry's lead-off hitter
Blake Hyman all the way around to score, as the Vikings drew first blood against the Panthers in the 1st. LaGrange (3-0) wasted no time tallying runs of their own, responding with a 3-run bottom of the 1st inning, giving them a 3-1 lead. The lead would soon grow in the bottom of the 2nd as the Panthers pushed the advantage to 4-1.Â
After squandering a bases loaded, one-out opportunity in the 4th, the Vikings (3-2) would respond in the 6th. Down 5-1 entering the inning,
John D'Amelio's two-run homerun to left field cut the Panthers lead in half. The Vikings would go on to manufacture three more runs in the inning, thanks in part to a two-RBI single from
Nick Brunswick. All told, the Vikings would score seven runs on six hits with D'Amelio himself collecting four RBI's and a pair of hits in the 6
th inning alone. Â
The Vikings newly acquired three-run lead would soon be in jeopardy though. LaGrange dealt a major blow in the 7th as timely hits and costly errors culminated into a five-run half-inning for the Panthers. Now trailing by two, Berry scratched a run across in the 8th while leaving two on base. Following the addition of two more runs from the Panthers in the same inning, LaGrange's lead proved to be insurmountable for Berry's offense in the 9th.
Making his first collegiate start for Berry was RHP
Daniel Jones, who, after 1.1 innings, was relieved by fellow freshman pitcher,
Jackson Halla. Halla navigated his way through the middle innings, surrendering just one run over 3.2 innings before handing the ball over to veteran
Andrew Norred. After a scoreless half innings, Norred passed the baton to
Tyler Cassidy in the 7th. A short-lived outing from Cassidy and a handful of baserunners forced the hand of BC Head Coach
David Beasley, electing to go to
Patrick O'Rourke in a damage control spot, followed by
Will Macolino in the 8th.
Berry now eyes its first home series this upcoming weekend against Pfeiffer. The first pitch of the double header of Saturday is slated for 1:00 p.m.
