Mt. Berry, Ga. - Berry out-scored Piedmont 8-2 in the second half en route to a 16-6 victory in women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Valhalla, giving the Vikings back-to-back home wins to start the season.
Haley Larsen and
Adrienna Van Soelen each scored four goals for the Vikings in the victory, with
Molley Cross adding a game-high three assists in the win.
Ally Washburn had five saves in her first career start between the pipes to earn the win for BC.
"Overall, I was extremely proud of the team for maintaining control and the composure that led us to the win," said Berry head coach
Brittni Hall. "Ally really stepped up in her first start and had some crucial stops in the first half. Our control of the draw really helped us maintain possession and control most of the game."
With the game tied at 1-1 early in the first quarter, Berry would go on a 5-0 run that stretched into the second quarter to take a 6-1 lead. Van Soelen had a pair of goals during the run, with
Maddie Mashburn, Larsen, and Ally Sprayberry each scoring once.
Piedmont (0-1) would trim the advantage to 8-4 at halftime, and after the second man-advantage goal of the game for the Lions, it would be 8-5 four minutes into the third quarter. The momentum would come to a quick end for Piedmont, as Berry would clamp down on defense, turning bad clears by the guests into goals. Van Soelen, Mashburn, and
Alexa Medor would score by the end of the quarter to make it 11-5. Berry's run would reach six as Sprayberry, Larsen, and Van Soelen each scored again to make it 14-5.
"Haley and Adrienna had some notable goals and assists that helped us push momentum on the offensive end," Coach Hall said.
Piedmont would get a third goal with the man-advantage to make it 14-6, but a goal by
AnnaKate Estock preceeded the final goal of the game by Larson with just over a minute to go, starting a running clock with a 10-goal differential and essentially ending the game before the final whistle.
Piedmont would turn the ball over 40 times as the Lions went just 14-of-32 on clear attempts. Larsen was a force all over the field for the Vikings, causing six turnovers and collecting six ground balls. Sprayberry was credited with eight ground balls, most of which came during failed clears by the guests.
The Vikings will not play a game in Valhalla until Feb. 26. The team will have a three-game road swing, starting Friday at Southwestern University.
