MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - No.10-ranked Berry defeated Rhodes College 3-0 (25-13, 25-18,25-12) on Saturday afternoon at The Cage Center in Southern Athletic Association volleyball action.
Berry (15-3, 9-1 SAA) took the first set 25-13, overwhelming the Lynx defense. The Vikings got an early lead on the Lynx 5-1 setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon. A couple of attack errors from Berry put Rhodes within a point of taking the lead, but thanks to a couple of kills from
Peyton Breissinger the Vikings regained the spark they needed to go up 12-8.
A 9-1 run gave the Vikings the momentum to close out the first set. Berry held Rhodes (8-11, 1-9 SAA) to a .000 hitting percentage, as the Lynx just barely found themselves in the positives all game.
The Vikings won the second set 25-18 this time in a closer match up. Four tied scores lit up the scoreboard before the Vikings found their groove. Three errors in a row by Rhodes put Berry up 6-6, but then a six-point run again placed the Vikings within reach of the second set win. The Viking defense held Rhodes to only six kills, with Berry tacking on four blocks in the set.
Berry had the opportunity to show off its depth in the third set, finishing off the Lynx 25-12. Rhodes saw their largest lead of the day in an early 4-1 score to kick off the final set. An ace from freshman
Kat Kelyman put Berry ahead for the first time of the set and they didn't look back from there. A 7-1 scoring spree for the Vikings almost doubled up their lead 14-8.
Ahead 21-12, the Vikings closed the match out in style. After a Rhodes service error, Kelyman notched another set, then
Jordan Skief sent down a kill to set up match point. Skief and
Lindsey MacDiarmid blocked the final attack from the Lynx, giving the Vikings the win.

Overall, Berry recorded 41 kills on the day, with 11 coming from Breissinger who hit .391 on the day.
Cypress Guenther led her team with four blocks out of the 16 the team piled on.
Emily Rapach put up 22 assists, and
Kate Whittle had 21 digs in the back row.
The Vikings will cap off the weekend and the home regular season slate on Sunday facing Hendrix in the Cage at 12 p.m.
