Mt. Berry, Ga. - The Berry women's basketball team defeated Southern Athletic Association foe Millsaps College 65-42 Sunday afternoon in the Cage. The Vikings move to 13-6 overall, and 7-1 in the SAA, with their winning streak hitting six in a row.
"After winning at their house last week, we knew that they would come back very aggressively, wanting to get us back," said senior guard
Kish Chandler, who led the Vikings with 18 points. "The last game against Millsaps was very hectic, so we tried to keep our composure and made sure that we stayed together as a team. It's definitely a rivalry game and they came in with a chip on their shoulder, and with intentions to beat us."
Both teams had a slow start to the contest until
Delaney Noe,
Sydney Blankenship, and Chandler all hit three-pointers in a row to make it 11-2, quickly changing the pace of the game. Leading by nine points put the Vikings in a comfortable position for the rest of the half.
Berry was struggling to find the basket in the second quarter until Blankenship made her second three-pointer of the day, putting the Vikings up 25-11. Berry's defense held off the Majors enough to go into halftime with a comfortable 30-18 lead.
During the third quarter, the Majors cashed in on defensive errors by the Vikings and got within seven points of tying the score at 40-33, but their hopes of a comeback were unsuccessful thanks to a pair of
Sarah Wright free-throws to end the third quarter, and a Chandler 3-pointer to begin the fourth, making it 44-32.
After Chandler's 3-pointer, Noe and
Faith Humphrey also hit shots for the Vikings to make it 50-33. The Majors would not come within 15 points for the rest of the game.
Berry head coach
Thomas Johnson said that the Vikings have found depth in their young roster so far this season. "We've got a pretty good rotation of eight or nine players playing really well, we've got good depth and that's the great thing about this team."
Blankenship had 16 points and a team-best eight rebounds for the Vikings, joining Chandler in double-digits in scoring. In all, 10 different players scored for Berry in the win.
Andrea Rayford had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead Millsaps.
The Vikings will next face SAA foe Rhodes College this Friday at 6 p.m. in The Cage Center.
