In a match-up of the top two teams in the Southern Athletic Association standings, Berry's women's basketball team's winning streak came to an end Friday night with a 60-48 loss to Rhodes at the Cage Center. The Vikings are now 13-7 overall, and 7-2 in the SAA, with both losses coming to Rhodes.
Sydney Blankenship and
Kish Chandler scored all 10 of Berry's points in the opening quarter, but a 9-0 run by the Lynx gave the guests a 16-10 lead after the first 10 minutes.
The run continued to start the second quarter as Rhodes drained a three-point basket to start the frame; however, the Vikings would play Rhodes evenly for the quarter as it would be 24-18 at halftime.
Berry pulled within four early in the third quarter at 24-20, but a 16-0 run by the Lynx put the game out of reach. Rhodes led by as many as 20 in the period and were up 42-24 going to the final quarter.
The Vikings would out-score Rhodes 24-18 in the final quarter, with
Raven Washington and
Kenadie Lee each scoring five and Blankenship adding eight. Still, the hole was too deep to climb out of as Rhodes (16-2, 8-0) earned the win by a dozen.
Blankenship led the team in points, netting 13.
Rhodes was led by Ellen Hagen's 15 points, while A'niya Lagarde added a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Vikings will be back in action against Hendrix this Sunday at 12 p.m. in the Cage Center.
