Baseball Wins One, Drops Two to Oglethorpe

Rome, Ga. – The Berry College baseball team dropped two of the three games to Oglethorpe over the weekend.

In game one, the Vikings defeated the Stormy Petrels 12-2. Ben Coker (3-0) got the start in the circle, pitching six innings, striking out 11 batters and only giving up five hits and two runs. The bats were hot from the beginning as the Vikings went up 2-0 in the first as a result of a couple of hits from John D'Amelio and Wesley Wade. Berry kept Oglethorpe scoreless until the seventh inning when they scored their only two runs of the game.

Jack Poist led the way for the Vikings with four hits, three RBIs and two runs. Levi Cloud also had an impressive outing with three hits, two runs and an RBI.

Game two saw a lot of errors from both teams, as Oglethorpe committed five and Berry three, but also a lot of hits with Oglethorpe connecting with eight and Berry with ten. Patrick O'Rourke got his first start in the circle for the Vikings.

Oglethorpe scored first, but Berry quickly answered. The game remained close throughout, as both teams found just what they needed each inning. The Stormy Petrels sealed the deal with a double from Keane in the seventh and another double from Weir in ninth, resulting in two runs. The Vikings fell 8-7.

The final game of the series was on Sunday and the bats were hot for Oglethorpe. As a team, the Petrels had 15 hits with no errors and scored 19 runs. The Vikings did connect with 11 hits, but only scored five runs.
