The No. 3-seeded Berry women's soccer team gets their shot at redemption against No. 2 seed Rhodes on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinal game in the SAA Championship Tournament being hosted by Centre in Danville, Ky.
The Vikings lost their regular-season game on the road against the Lynx 2-0, but Berry head coach Kathy Brown said is eager to get another shot at Rhodes, especially in the conference semifinals.Â
"I'm excited to get to play Rhodes," Brown said. "The minute that (regular-season) game ended, we walked away and we sat down for a long time talking about the things we should've done, could've done.
"At the time I thought I would love to play them again right now, and we would be better. You don't often get that second chance," she said.Â
In order to get the opportunity to play Rhodes, Berry had to get past Millsaps in the quarterfinals.
The Vikings started off slower than usual, with the Majors scoring the first goal of the game finding their way past Berry goalkeeper Maggie Jones on a penalty kick.
That, however, would be the only blemish on Jones and Berry's defense as the Vikings found their groove towards the end of halftime, evening out the score right before the clock ran out on a goal by Christina Marijanich.Â
Within five minutes during the second half, the Vikings scored an additional three goals to close out the game – Ellie Sherrod, Kendall Varitek and Karsen Brantley – to close out a 4-1 win and advance them to the semis.Â
"I think we did a good job of not panicking and continuing to believe in the process of how we play and how we move the ball and find success," said Brown.Â
Berry advanced to the conference championship in the 2021 spring season under coach Brown, and she said that chemistry and working hard as a unit is essential to being successful especially at this important point in the season.Â
"Chemistry is the most important thing at the college women, team chemistry is huge. If you're not united and the chemistry isn't there it's difficult to be great," said Brown.Â
Peaking at the right time as a team is key, and being a close and bonded team, is just as important.Â
"Everything's coming together at the right time which is exciting to me," Brown said. "They've always been tight, they're a good group and we've been building on what we started last year. I think everything is falling into place at the right time."Â
In the other tournament semifinal, No. 1 seed Centre faces No. 4 Sewanee at 5 p.m. The winners of the two semis square off for the SAA championship Sunday.
