The Berry volleyball team came home after a long weekend on the road, bringing back two hard-fought Southern Athletic Association victories with them, including one that they desperately sought.
Following Friday's three-set sweep of Millsaps, the Vikings headed to Birmingham, Ala., on Saturday to face Birmingham-Southern, the only team that has defeated Berry this season, and when the marathon showdown against the Panthers ended, the Vikings came away with the win.
Battling it out in yet another five-set game against Southern, Berry emerged with a 3-2 decision that improves the team to 15-1 overall and 9-1 in the SAA. The win was also the eighth straight for the Vikings.
The Vikings took the first set 25-20, only to lose the second and third sets, both by identical 25-20 margins. But in the fourth set, the Vikings responded, winning 25-22 to tie the game and send into a fifth and deciding set.
That's when Berry stood their ground, as the two teams nearly doubled the length of the normal fifth-set with the Vikings emerging on top, 26-24.
Not surprisingly, the impressive game came with impressive highlights for Berry.
At the net,
Jazzy Innis had an incredible 29 kills for Berry, followed by
Peyton Breissinger and
Molly Bergin with adding 18 and 16 kills, respectively. Setting up the Vikings was
Emily Rapach, who had a total of 64 assists, while
Laura Beier anchored the defense with 31 digs.
On Tuesday, the No. 15-ranked Vikings are back home at the Cage taking on in-state rival and No.13-ranked Emory in a "Pack the House" clash.
