Box Score ROME, Ga. — Tyler Calvert hit a three-run homer early in the game, as the Berry College baseball team closed competition at the 2020 Berry Invitational on Saturday night with a narrow 10-9 loss to No. 19 Denison.
Berry slips to 9-5 overall while Denison improved to 3-2.
Wesley Maxey took his first loss of the year in relief while Denison's Patrick Neenan earned the win and Henry Haack earned the save.
Denison went ahead 1-0 after the first inning before Calvert's second homer of the year put the Vikings up 3-1. Calvert added his fourth RBI of the day in the second on a ground out to put the Vikings up 4-1. Berry tacked on another run off an error in the second to go up 5-1 before the Big Red began to chip away.
Denison plated a pair in the fourth and a run in the fifth inning before a Jon Hemings pinch-hit double put the Vikings back on top 6-5. Dension regained the lead in the sixth off a two-RBI single, but Calvert again came up big for Berry, tying the game in the sixth off a sacrifice fly. Dalton Smith scurried home on a wild pitch in the inning to put Berry on top by a run.
Berry kept the Denison hitters in check until the ninth inning when a passed ball and an errant throw allowed Denison to take the lead. With the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth, Quinn Smith scored on a balk to pull Berry to within one. A tough-luck strikeout from Wesley Wade ended the game after nearly four hours.
The Vikings take on Emory on Monday at 1:00 p.m. in Atlanta before continuing conference play at Millsaps on March 14.
