Baseball Wins Exciting Rubber Game, 10-9, on Sunday at OU

ATLANTA – Scoring five runs in the top of the ninth inning, the Berry College baseball team bested Oglethorpe University 10-9 on Sunday to take the three-game series.

The win improved the Vikings to 23-9 overall and 9-6 in the Southern Athletic Association. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 15-15 and 6-9.

The game was tied at five apiece at the end of eight innings. BC then plated five runs in the top of ninth on four hits to go ahead, 10-5. 

The Stormy Petrels added four runs of their own in the bottom of the ninth. The tying run was on third, and the game-winning run was on second for OU. But a flyout to right field ended the game and ensured the BC victory.

Casey Whitaker led the Berry offense--hitting 3-for-5 at the plate--with three RBIs in the win.

Austin Haight, Jacob Delk and Grant Perkins added two hits for the Vikings as well. Haight was 2-for-5 and scored once for BC. Delk was 2-for-3, with two doubles and a run scored. Perkins was 2-for-4, and knocked in two RBIs.

Dusty Tyson, Ben Jernigan and Slade Dale rounded out the Berry offense with one hit apiece.

Tyson, Jernigan, Dale and Brady Smith knocked in the final RBIs for Berry.

William Gibbons (2-0) earned the win on the mound for the Vikings. Gibbons allowed four hits and four runs, while striking out one in the outing. JP Chamblee finished the game on the mound for Berry, allowing two hits and no runs to close the game.

For the Stormy Petrels, Jarvis Miller led the offense with three hits in the loss. Miller was 3-for-5 at the plate, knocking in two RBIs and scoring once for OU. Teammates Britton Araujo, Adrian Celata and Brandon Fish each added two hits as well.

Berry will host Maryville College in their next game on Tuesday, April 5 at 4 p.m.
