Baseball Upsets BSC in SAA Tournament, 11-8

BIRMINGHAM -- The Berry College baseball team upset top-seeded Birmingham-Southern, 11-8, on Saturday.

The Vikings rallied from an early 4-0 deficit. Austin Haight grounded out to score Dusty Tyson for annunearned run in the sixth inning for the decisive tally. Berry tacked on two insurance runs in the eighth frame for the final 11-8 margin.

The Vikings (27-15) are in the driver's seat after the win. BC needs to win one game Sunday vs. BSC to advance to next weekend's SAA Championship series. BSC, ranked seventh in the nation, dropped to 31-10.

Both teams had 12 hits in the game. Ben Jernigan led BC by going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run. Slade Dale was 2-of-4 with four RBI. Brady Smith went 2-for-5 with a double and Grant Perkins was 2-of-4 with a double and three RBI.

William Gibbons tossed 4 1/3 innings in relief of TJ Montgomery and got the win. Gibbons (3-0) allowed one run, three hits and struck out four batters. J.T. Eggert worked the final 2 2/3 innings and earned his first save of the season.

Sam Roberts hit 3-for-5 to lead the Panthers. Ryan Gaines (9-2) started and took the defeat for BSC.

Berry will advance to the SAA Championship series with a win in Sunday's first game. Should the Vikes drop the first game, they have another chance to advance in the following game.
