COLLIERVILLE, Tenn. – The Berry College softball team defeated both Sewanee and Rhodes College on Friday to begin play at the Southern Athletic Association Tournament. Game scores were 15-0 and 6-1 respectively.
Brittany Tuttle led the offense in game one, batting 4-for-4 at the plate. Tuttle scored three runs and knocked in one RBI in the win.
Both Sarah Moore and Elisabeth Federici each added two hits apiece in the win. Moore was 2-for-2 at the plate, knocking in one RBI and scoring three runs for the Vikings. Federici was 2-for-2 as well. She added one run and one RBI.
Nine other Vikings tallied hits in the victory: Brittany Ferrell, Shakarah Boswell, Marie Collop, Kenzie Fleming, Genna Telschow, Sarah Brown, Allison DeBusk, Ally Claytor and Karlie Jarrett.
Ferrell added a home run in the contest. Boswell knocked in three RBIs. Collop and DeBusk each knocked in two as well.
Allie Coronado (17-8) earned the win on the mound for Berry. Coronado tossed all five innings, allowing only one hit in the outing.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 8-22 on the season. Charlsey Shirley had the only hit of the game for Sewanee.
BC took the nightcap, 6-1, against Rhodes College.
The wins improved the Vikings to 34-6. The Lynx fell to 23-19.
Collop led the Berry offense in the win, batting 3-for-3 at the plate. Collop hit a home run and scored twice for the Vikings.
Fleming added two hits also. She was 2-for-3 in the win and added one RBI. Tuttle, Moore, Katlin Seger and Claytor rounded out the offense with one hit apiece.
Kassie Howard (24-2) earned the complete-game win in the circle. Howard allowed three hits in the outing, while striking out eight batters.
For the Lynx, Christine Hume led the offense with one hit and one run scored.
The second-seeded Vikings will take on first-seeded Birmingham-Southern College in a winner's bracket game on Saturday at 5 p.m. EDT.
