ROME, Ga. -- Birmingham-Southern College swept a doubleheader from Berry College on Saturday. Game scores were 2-0 and 9-7.
Berry dropped to 25-14 and 11-10 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Panthers improved to 29-9 and sewed up the top spot in the SAA with a 17-4 conference mark.
Scoring the only runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning, BSC defeated Berry, 2-0, in game one.
Five BC players added one hit in the outing: Dusty Tyson, Austin Haight, Ben Jernigan, Jacob Delk and Casey Whitaker.
Tyler Hamel led the Panthers' offense in game one. He had a home run, three hits and two RBIs in the win. Teammates Taylor McCracken, Matt Brown and A.J. Hunt each added two hits apiece for the Panthers.
Jernigan (4-3) took the loss on the mound for the Vikings. Jernigan tossed seven innings, allowing 11 hits and only one earned run. Jernigan also struck out six BSC batters in the outing.
John Melson and JP Chamblee finished the game on the mound for Berry, pitching one inning apiece.
Ryan Gaines (9-1) earned the win for BSC. Gaines tossed all nine innings for the Panthers, allowing five hits and no runs while striking out six in the victory.
In the nightcap, BC led 7-5 heading to the final inning. Berry then allowed four runs and fell, 9-7.
Tyson, Whitaker and Haight all collected two hits apiece and scored twice in the contest. The Vikings used six pitchers and Chamblee (3-1) suffered his first defeat of the season.
The Panthers outhit Berry 15-9. BSC's Brayden Housel went 4-for-4 to lead all hitters.
The final day of SAA play is on Sunday, which will determined where the Vikings play in next week's SAA Championships.
