Baseball Opens with Sweep of Emory & Henry

ROME, Ga. -- The Berry College baseball team swept their season-opening doubleheader against visiting Emory & Henry on Saturday. The Vikings took the first game, 8-4, and finished the nightcap by a score of 1-0, in eight innings.

BC moved to 2-0, while Emory & Henry fell to 0-2.

Ben Jernigan led the Berry offense in the first game with a two-run home run in the bottom of the third. Jernigan was 2-for-2 at the plate, with two hits, two runs, and two RBIs.

Slade Dale, Hunter White, and Jacob Delk each added a pair of RBIs and Alfred Francis scored three times for the Vikings. 

Parker Austin (1-0) earned the win on the mound. Austin pitched three innings of relief for the Vikes, giving up only three hits and two runs (one earned).

For the Wasps, Hunter Jeffries was 2-for-4 in the loss.

In the second game of the day, Dale singled to left field in the bottom of the eighth inning to bring in Dusty Tyson and seal the 1-0 victory.

Starting pitcher Ryan O'Connell threw five complete innings, giving up no runs, allowing two hits and striking out three batters. Winning pitcher Will Gibbons (1-0) gave up one hit and struck out four batters in the final three innings of the game.

Zach Shepherd (0-1) took the loss on the hill for E&H. Shepherd threw one and one-third innings, giving up one run, one walk and three hits.

The Vikings and Wasps close out their three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is 1 p.m. at William R. Bowdoin Field.
