Berry Baseball Splits with Sewanee, 17-10 and 4-3

SEWANEE, Tenn. –- The Berry College baseball team split with Sewanee on Saturday afternoon to open up conference play. The Vikings took the first game, 17-10, while the Tigers prevailed in the nightcap, 4-3.

Berry moved to 11-1 overall and 1-1 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Tigers are 1-12 and 1-1.

In game one, Greg Keel was 4-for-5 at the plate for BC. Keel added four RBIs and three runs in the win.

Both Dusty Tyson and Alfred Francis added three hits on the day as well. Tyson was 3-for-6 at the plate and added two RBIs and a run. Francis was 3-for-5, hit in two RBIs and scored two runs for Berry.

Ben Jernigan added his fourth home run of the year, knocking in two RBIs to open up the game.

BC was ahead 4-0 going into the top of the sixth. The Tigers then plated four runs to tie it up in the bottom of the seventh.

Berry answered with four and nine runs in the seventh and ninth innings respectively to ensure the victory.

Ryan O'Connell started the game on the mound for the Vikings. O'Connell pitched five innings for Berry, giving up six hits and four runs while striking out one.

Parker Austin (2-0) earned the win for Berry. Austin pitched two innings, allowing five hits and only one earned run. John Melson tossed two innings and got the save.

Jacob Delk and Casey Whitaker led the BC offense in the second game, adding two hits apiece in the loss.

Hunter White and Keel each added an RBI for the Vikes as well.

Sewanee scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead. BC then rallied for two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but could not overtake the Tigers.

Trey Rampy (0-1) took the loss on the mound for Berry. Rampy pitched five complete innings, allowing three hits and four runs.

For the Tigers, Jackson Cooper, Tony Dykes, Derek Hullings and Drew Mancuso each added a hit in the win.

Berry will play Sewanee to finish out the three-game series on Sunday. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
