Baseball splits with Oglethorpe on Saturday

ROME, Ga. -- Berry College and Oglethorpe University split a doubleheader on Saturday. The Vikings captured the first game, 5-4. The Stormy Petrels took the nightcap, 9-6.

Berry moved to 21-16-1 and 11-8-1 in the SAA. OU is now 25-12 and 11-8 in conference play.

The Vikings dressed in pink to support breast cancer in game one. Berry rallied from a late 4-1 deficit to prevail, 5-4, in 10 innings.

BC plated 3 runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 4-4. After holding OU scoreless in the 10th, the Vikings' McTier Mosley hit a single to left-center field to score Ben Jernigan for the game-winning run. Jernigan went 2-for-2 and hit a home run. Sam Joyce was 2-of-3 for the Vikes.

Jernigan started the game on the mound for BC but got no decision after allowing a run and 7 hits in 7 1/3 innings. JP Chamblee (1-0) tossed the last 2 frames and earned his first win of the season.

The Stormy Petrels collected 12 hits in the game to Berry's 6. Andre Turnquest led the OU offense after going 3-for-5. Joe Marco (2-4) was the losing pitcher.

In the nightcap, the Stormy Petrels jumped out a 4-0 lead. The Vikings battled back and tallied twice in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 7-6--but the home team got no closer.

Alex McGill--one of six seniors recognized on Senior Day prior to the game--went 3-of-4 with a run and 2 RBI to lead BC batters. McGill became Berry's all-time DII hits leader with 158 after collecting his 3 singles. Additionally, he stole another base, which put him at 15-of-15 for his career.

Alfred Francis was 2-for4 and scored twice for the Vikes. Starting pitcher Will Estes dropped to 3-1 on the season after allowing 4 runs and 6 hits.

For Oglethorpe, starter Kyle Mitchell earned the win. Three OU batters knocked 2 hits in the game. The Stormy Petrels collected 14 hits to BC's 10.

The teams are scheduled to play a game at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
