Vikings sweep DH from visiting Sewanee, 9-0 and 9-0

ROME, Ga. – Berry College swept a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader against visiting Sewanee on Saturday. The Vikings took both games by identical 9-0 scores.

The Vikings moved to 10-9 and 3-2 in the SAA. Sewanee dropped to 4-6 and 2-6 in conference play.

In the first game, Berry snapped a 5-game winless streak. Starter Ben Jernigan pitched a complete game shutout. He tossed 9 innings, allowed 5 hits, struck out 4 Tigers and allowed no walks.

The Vikings plated 3 runs in the second inning and never looked back. Starter Charles Warren took the loss and allowed 4 runs (1 earned). Michael Walker hit 2-of-4 with a double to lead Tiger batters.

BC outhit Sewanee, 14-5. Designated hitter Nick Stidham went 3-for-5 with a double and scored twice. Doug Heath went 2-3 with a triple and scored 2 times. Devin Skelton and Greg Keel both collected 2 hits apiece.

In the nightcap, the stellar BC pitching continued as starter Will Estes and Joey Bell allowed only 2 hits in the 7-inning shutout. Estes threw 4 2/3 innings, allowed 1 hit and struck out 5 hitters. Bell tossed 2 1/3 frames, allowed a hit and fanned 2 Tigers.

The Vikings had 14 hits in the contest. Berry scored a run in the first inning but broke the game open with 3 runs in the fifth inning and 5 more in the sixth. Alex McGill paced the offense for BC. He went 4-4 with a double and 2 RBI.  Keel went 2-for-2 and scored twice.

Walker had both of Sewanee's hits in the game.

The teams play on Sunday at noon to close the 3-game SAA series.
