Volleyball Beats Panthers in Five-Set Thriller

ROME, Ga. -- Jessica Gum had a team-high 15 kills as Berry College rallied to defeat Birmingham-Southern 3-2 (21-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-21, 17-15) on Sunday.

Berry improved to 20-5 and 11-3 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Panthers dropped to 21-4 and end the regular season tied with the Vikes at 11-3 (second place) in the conference.

BC trailed 1-0 and had to win the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set. The Vikings led 8-3 at the crossover, but BSC rallied and tied the score at 13-13. Katie O'Rourke notched the match-winning kill. She had 14 kills, hit .414 and added six blocks.

Christina Goforth had 13 kills and 15 digs. Lauren Schmitz posted 46 assists and 18 digs. Katie Truluck netted a team-best 20 digs for the home club.

For the match, Berry hit .206 to the Panthers' .187. The Vikings had 24 blocks to BSCs' 11.

Jeneva Salter posted a match-best 19 kills for the visitors. 

"We were really excited to share today with the Piller family and raise awareness for childhood cancer," said Berry Head Coach Mika Robinson. "It was the icing on the cake to win a tightly-contested SAA match against a very good BSC team. The SAA tournament is going to be very exciting this year if the last few weeks are any indication."

Berry plays at the Emory Tournament next weekend, before SAA Tournament begins at Hendrix the following weekend.
