Berry salvaged split at Saturday tri-match

ROME, Ga. – Berry College split its two matches at a tri-match held at the Cage Center on Saturday. The Vikings lost to Birmingham-Southern, 3-2, then rallied to sweep Maryville, 3-0, in the nightcap.

In the opening contest, Berry lost an exciting five-set SAA affair by scores of 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23 and 15-11.

The Vikings got a season-best 20 kills and a .441 hitting performance from Katie O'Rourke. Emily Stromberg posted a double-double with 16 kills and a match-high 16 digs. Lauren Schmitz dished 43 assists for the home team.

For B-SC, Lynsie Byrd spiked a match-leading 21 kills. The visitors outhit Berry .245 to .148 for the match. In the final set, the Panthers hit .444 to BC's .294.

In the non-conference match vs. Maryville, BC prevailed 25-23, 25-15, 25-23. O'Rourke and Stromberg both collected nine kills. O'Rourke added five blocks and Katie Truluck recorded a match-high 18 kills.

For Maryville (8-7), Mary Kate White posted a match-best 10 kills.

The Vikings (6-9, 1-1) host SAA foe Millsaps on Sunday. Match time is 2 p.m. at the Cage Center.
