NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Berry College volleyball team played two ranked teams on Friday at the Christopher Newport Tournament and suffered two defeats. BC lost to Mount Union (3-0), and the host team, CNU (3-1).

Seventh-ranked Mount Union defeated Berry 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-12) in the Vikings' first match of the tournament. Anna Keappler had eight kills and Emily Stromberg collected 17 digs in the defeat for BC. After the match, Mount Union improved to 7-0.

Against #13 Christopher Newport, the Vikes got off to a great start by taking the first set, 25-21. In the second set, BC had several leads (8-2, 15-9, 17-11, 24-23) before the Captains rallied to win, 26-24. CNU captured game three, 25-17, before taking last set, 25-19.

Katie O'Rourke had 11 kills and six blocks in the match. Keappler added 10 kills and 11 digs and Lauren Schmitz dished 37 assists.

"Tonight was all about ball control," BC Head Coach Mika Robinson. "When we served aggressively and stayed in system offensively, we played really well. When those two pieces were missing, we struggled against two solid teams who stayed on the attack."

Berry (2-8) closes out play at the tournament on Saturday. The Vikings face William Peace at noon and Johns Hopkins at 2 p.m.
