Box Score 3 CONWAY, Ark. -- Berry College lost two chances to take the 2014 SAA Championships on Saturday. Needing to win one game, BC lost to Birmingham-Southern, 6-5, and then 6-3 to the Panthers in the "if" game.
BSC improved to 29-18 and the Vikings moved to 31-11. The Panthers won five straight elimination games to capture its first SAA crown.
To begin the day, Berry defeated Millsaps, 11-5, to reach the title game(s). Kayla Davis improved to 12-3 after throwing six innings and allowing one run and six hits.
BC led 11-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh before the Majors plated for runs off reliever Andrea College for the final margin.
Abby Daniels had three of Berry's 17 hits in the contest. She was 3-5 with a double. Sarah Moore cracked a home run and Sahkarah Boswell recorded a triple for the Vikes. Brittany Ferrell and Shelby Smith collected two hits each for Berry.
Berry faced Birmingham-Southern in the championship in the title championship game.
In the first game, BSC took the game over Berry to force another game for a do or die for either team. The Vikings were undefeated leading up to this game, so with the loss to BSC, a second must be played to decide the SAA champions. BSC defeated BC by a final score of 6-5.
The Panthers jumped on the board early with a fielders choice that plated the first run of the game. Berry wasn't able to get on the board until they scored three runs in the fourth inning. Smith started the inning with a triple and Marie Collop singled to score Smith. Brown later hit a two RBI double to give them them the short lasting lead.
Birmingham-Southern answered with four runs in the fifth to lead the game 6-3. The Vikings tried to retaliate in the bottom of the sixth but were only able to plate a pair of runs.
The Berry offense was strong by producing 13 hits in the matchup compared to the Panthers six. Four different Vikes players had two hits in the game: Sara Vigue, Ferrell, Smith, and Brown. Brown was able to plate four of the five runs in the game.
Allie Coronado started the game for Berry. She received the loss and moved her record to 11-4. Coronado went 4 1/3 innings with giving up six runs and seven hits. Marie Collop finished the pitching duties without giving up a run and only one base hit.
Bethany Fronk (16-11) pitched for the Panthers, and she pitched the full length of the game. She surrendered 13 hits while striking out three. Hannah Harris and Alex Skene grabbed a pair of hits to account for four of the eight total hits for BSC.
In the second game of the SAA Championship, BSC prevailed, 6-3. The Panthers jumped out to a 6-0 lead before the Vikings plated three runs in the fifth frame.
Collop started in the pitching circle and dropped to 3-2. Kayla Davis allowed just one unearned run in the last 4 2/3 innings.
Ferrell had an RBI triple to lead BC hitters. BSC had 11 hits to Berry's six.
Collop and Smith were named to the SAA Tournament team.
The Vikings and Panthers will now wait to hear if they are invited to the NCAA Division III Championships.
