Box Score CONWAY, Ark. -- The Berry College softball team defeated Hendrix, 9-1 in five innings, on the first day of the 2014 Southern Athletic Association Tournament.
Berry improved to 30-9 and set a new benchmark for wins in a season. Hendrix, which has an elimination game on Saturday morning, dropped to 16-21.
Berry broke the game open with six runs--all unearned--in the third inning.
Senior Sara Vigue went 2-3 with a double and three RBI to lead Viking hitters. Brittany Ferrell was 2-3 and Shelby Smith hit 2-3 with a triple and three RBI. Freshmen Marie Collop and Allison DeBusk both knocked home runs for the Vikes.
On the mound, Allie Coronado continued her strong pitching. She improved to 11-3 after allowing one unearned run and scattering three hits. Shelby Anderson was 2-2 and had an RBI single to lead Warrior hitters.
Berry will play Millsaps winner in a winner's bracket game at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The Majors defeated second-seed BSC, 6-4, in 11 innings on Friday night.
The tournament is slated to end on Saturday night after inclement weather expected Sunday forced a tournament chedule change.
