JACKSON, Miss. -- Berry College swept a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader from Millsaps by scores of 2-1 and 6-4 on Saturday.
Berry improved to 19-7 and 8-3. Millspas dropped to 13-13 and 3-7.
In game one, Ben Jernigan (6-2) got back on track by going the complete nine innings by only allowing five hits and one run off a solo homer by Millsaps William Chenoweth in the bottom of the sixth. Millsaps sent out the junior righty pitcher, Smokey Ethridge (3-5), to counter. Ethridge hurled all nine innings only giving up six hits and two runs.
Sam Joyce went two for three and plated the first run for Berry in the top of the third inning. Stephen Gaylor knocked a sacrifice fly to add on to Berry's lead in the sixth.
In game two, the bats woke up with 14 hits total in the game. Gaylor collected two and had one RBI in the game. Zach Farmer, Alfred Francis, Grant Perkins, and Joyce each collected a hit and knocked in three RBIs total.
Ryan O'Connell (4-0) pitched five and one-third innings giving up seven hits, four runs, and a three-run homer. Keith Shumaker (3-1) opposed O'Connell, going four and third with five runs and four walks. Chad Busby came in for the Vikes to hold the fort to get his first save on the year.
Berry and Millsaps face off again tomorrow at 1 p.m. in a nine-inning affair to see if the Vikings can sweep the series on the road.
