Baseball splits with #15 B-SC

ROME, Ga. -- Berry College and 15th ranked Birmingham-Southern split a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday. The Panthers took game one, 6-1, and the Vikings rebounded by taking the nightcap, 5-4.

BC is now 16-6 and 6-2 in the SAA. B-SC moved to 18-4, 9-2.

In the second game, Joey Bell (1-1) started and got the win. He allowed three runs in four innings, but was helped as the Vikes plated five runs in the bottom of the fourth. Zach Dutton tossed the fifth frame, before Ryan O'Connell worked the final two innings. O'Connell earned his second save of the year.

Alex McGill went 2-2 with a double. Alfred Francis collected two hits in his three at-bats. B-SC out-hit Berry, 11-7, in the contest.

In game one, starter Blake Stephens improved to 5-0 after allowing just one unearned run and five hits. At the plate, Jacob Mayfield went 4-4, scored twice and drove in one runner.

Ben Jernigan (5-2) started for Berry. He allowed thee runs and gave up 10 hits. Chad Busby gave up the other three runs in 2 1/3 innings of relief. 

Eight players had a base hit for BC. TC Boyd scored the team's lone run.

The Vikings and Panthers play one nine-inning game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
