Viking men's soccer gets late goal to advance, 1-0

CONWAY, Ark. -- Zak Wallingford scored in the 81st minute off an assist from Christian Fulbright as Berry College defeated Rhodes College, 1-0, on Friday afternoon. Fulbright found a sliding Wallingford at the far post on the scoring play.

With the win, BC surpassed the 10-win mark for the third straight season and moved to 10-6-1. Rhodes College ended its season with a 6-7-3 record.

The fifth-seeded Vikings face #1 Millsaps at 1 p.m. EST on Saturday in a Southern Athletic Association semifinal match.

"Today's game was not our best offensive performance, but overall we played well enough to win and finished the game strong," said Viking Head Coach Richard Vardy. "I'm very happy with the result and attitude of the guys. We are looking forward to the semifinal match."

Evenly matched, both teams battled it out the first half, but the score remained tied, 0-0, going into halftime.

Jon Nelson ensured the win for BC with four saves on the day. For Rhodes, Riley Sheen collected two saves in the loss.

Berry had the edge in shots, 14-9. BC had 10 second-half shots to four for the Lynx. Both teams had three corner kicks in the match.
