Box Score ATLANTA -- Whitworth University, ranked 12th in the nation, defeated Berry College, 2-0, at the Woodruff Physical Education Center on the campus of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.
Whitworth--which ended BC's five match winning streak--improved to 17-1-3. The Vikings ended their Cinderella run with a 13-7-1 record.
Berry goalkeeper Zachary Wroblewski had seven saves.
After applying early pressure with its offensive attack, Whitworth utilized a short corner kick in the 11th minute to take an early lead in the game. Colin Shockman took the corner, sending it a few yards to his side to teammate Spencer Wolfe. Taking advantage of a surprised Berry defense, Wolfe then crossed the ball towards the far post, where Sam Engle was waiting to head the ball in, giving the Pirates a 1-0 advantage.
Despite being out-shot in the first half, Berry was able to hang in the contest, trailing by just the one goal heading into halftime.
BC had one of its better opportunities of the game in the 53rd minute, when a foul call against Whitworth set up a free kick from 19-yards out, but an offside call cost the Vikings a shot at a score.
The Pirates added onto their lead in the 67th minute on Eric Espinoza's second goal of the season. After taking a pass from Austin Cassidy, Espinoza was able to beat a number of defenders to gain space, sending a shot past Wroblewski to push the Whitworth advantage to 2-0.
Whitworth goalkeeper Timmy Costa needed to make just one save in the game, as the Pirates' defense held the Vikings to just four total shots. Whitworth took 21 shots to four for the Vikings.
"This was a fair result against a very good team," said Berry Head Coach Richard Vardy. "They played a great game and I hope they continue their run."
Berry, which made its first NCAA Men's Soccer Championship appearance this year earned a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime win over Emory in the first round.
"We had some good moments, played a solid second half and showed a lot of heart," Vardy said. "Our heads are held high after a very good season--and a great last few weeks. We also want to thank all the fans that gave us wonderful support this weekend."
