Berry gets big win at Centre, 3-0

DANVILLE, Ky. -- Maggie Midkiff scored one goal and dished one assist as Berry College won at Centre College, 3-0, on Saturday.

The Vikings improved to 10-2 and 2-0 in the Southern Athletic Association. The Colonels fell to 7-3-1 and 0-2.

Midkiff assisted Bella Fornuto in the 14th minute for the match's first goal. Fornuto knocked in a shot from outside the box and the visitors maintained the 1-0 lead at halftime.

Centre outshot BC 21-10 in the game and 13-3 in the second half. The Vikings, however, converted two of its three shots in the final 45 minutes.

In the 79th minute, Tessa Piety headed in a corner kick from Michala Bibbins to push the margin to 2-0.

Midkiff tallied in the 87th minute for the final tally. She headed in a cross off a free kick taken by Rachel LeRoy.

Melissa Sanchez recorded nine saves and a shutout in goal for BC. For the Colonels, Olivia Alford stopped three Berry shots.

Of note:

-The win was the first over Centre--the two-time defending league champion--in three tries.

-The shutout was the ninth for Berry and the first for Sanchez this season.

-Berry is tied with Sewanee for first place in the SAA with a 2-0 record.

The Vikings play at SAA foe Millsaps next Friday.
