MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - A cool 2:30 p.m. kickoff at Bob Pearson Field set the stage for an important clash between the Berry Vikings and Maryville Scots for their SAA conference implications. With the Vikings already having a clinched position in the tournament, the Scots were in desperate need of a victory to increase their chances of also appearing at the tournament.
In the end, the Vikings tied the Scots 1-1, giving them the fifth seed in the tournament while the Scots settled for the sixth seed.
The first half found itself to be pretty even. Both teams traded chances up and down the field until the 32nd minute, where the Scots were able to find the back of the net. The goal came from Regan Boyd on a long strike to put the Vikings down 1-0 late in the half.
Despite trailing by one by halftime, the second half was a turnaround display from the Vikings. They turned up the heat on the offensive end, and it resulted in a crucial mistake by the Scots in the final minutes. A foul in the box gave the Vikings a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, and the team decided to give Gianna Maimone the chance to net the equalizer. With the team on her back, the junior followed through with her seventh goal of the season to make it 1-1. Even though the fireworks continued for the remaining eight minutes, the game would finish in a stalemate with each team earning a point.
As part of Senior Day festivities, the Vikings honored their three seniors who have given so much to this program for the past four years. All played huge roles towards the success that this program has faced in recent years. Those three were Kelsie Crosier, Annie Connors, and Mia Drischler. The Vikings will next play in the SAA conference tournament hosted at Bob Pearson field on Thursday November 5. They'll take on the fourth seed Rhodes College Lynx, a team they defeated 1-0 on the road in the regular season. Kickoff for that game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
