Late goals upend women's soccer at Capital

Box Score

COLUMBUS – Capital University tallied twice in the last 15 minutes of play to defeat Berry, 3-1, on the first day of the Fort Rapids Invitational on Friday.

The Vikings out-shot the Crusaders, 11-8, and led in corner kicks, 7-3. Sara Dillon netted Berry's goal in the 53rd minute. Molly Johnson earned the assist on the play after Dillon dribbled inside the 18-yard box and scored.

"It was a game of three faces really," said Berry Head Coach Lorenzo Canalis. "In the first half we were subject to their play gave up a goal. In the second half, we had the momentum and scored the tying goal in a very nice fashion with good ball movement. I really thought we could win it, but then they got a quick counter-attack and got two more goals. We can't blame the effort, and we will learn from this for next time."

Becca Cartmill posted one goal, and one assist, including the game-winner in the 78th minute, to lead the Crusaders (1-1-1 overall). Cartmill rebounded a deflection and, with the Vikings' keeper down after a collision with freshman Monique Hanayik, fired a shot from 30 yards into theopen net.

The Crusaders struck first in the ninth minute as Cartmill, playing a long ball down the right side, placed a perfect cross to open space in the middle. The ball was chased down by sophomore Mariah Richards, who sprinted from the back end to finish in the low right corner.

Freshman goalkeeper Melissa Sanchez made five saves for the Vikings.

Berry (2-1) plays Denison on Sunday in its final game of the tournament.
