Berry and Rhodes Softball Split to Open SAA Play

ROME, Ga. – Berry College and Rhodes College split a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader on Saturday at Ford Field. The Vikings took game one, 2-1. The Lynx prevailed in the nightcap, 5-4, in eight innings.

Berry is now 8-5 and 1-1 in the SAA. Rhodes is 7-5 and 1-1.

In game one, the home team plated its runs in the first inning. Jessica Washington singled and Sara Vigue reached on an error. Lacey Herring later singled up the middle to bring home both runners.

The Lynx countered with one run in the fourth frame. Danielle Smith single and later came home on a wild pitch for the tally with one out. Winning pitcher Caillee Shamoun (5-2) then got Allycia KIlene to pop-up, and struck out Courtney Williams with two runners on base to get out of the inning.

Shamoun allowed six hits, struck out five and walked no batters in the game.

In game two, the Vikes rallied with two unearned runs in the seventh to force extra innings. Herring had another RBI single to bring around Vigue and Holly Todd to knot the game at 4-4.

In the top of the eighth inning, however, the Lynx got the winning run. With bases loaded, Erin Parker hit a ball to Washington in no-man's land. Courtney Williams ran home from third for the game's final run. 

Relief pitcher Natalie Boyd (3-2) took the defeat. She allowed four runs in 4.1 innings. Abbey Daniels and Herring both had two hits in the contest.

The teams play another doubleheader on Sunday at Ford Field. First pitch is at noon.
