ROME, Ga. – Berry's softball team swept a Monday afternoon doubleheader from Millsaps at Ford Field. BC won the opener, 5-4, and the nightcap, 9-1.
Berry upped its record to 17-7 overall and 9-3 in Southern Athletic Association matchups. Millsaps fell to 10-13 and 4-8.
In game one, Berry led 2-0 through three innings when Emily Collins singled in two runs in the top of the fourth for Millsaps, knotting the action up at 2-2.
An inning and a half later, Kristen Stoll came up to bat with a run on first and none out for Berry. With the count at three balls and no strikes, Stoll knocked Molly Tyner's (4-8) pitch over the centerfield fence for the tiebreaking two-run home run. Natalie Boyd would later tack on a RBI single to put Berry ahead, 5-2.
The Majors scored one run in the sixth and added another in the seventh on a Kaitlyn Doles RBI double, making it a one-run game. Allison Coronado (4-3) stranded Doles on second by retiring Savannah Havard on a groundout to close out the action. The freshman earned the win for Berry with three innings of two-run (one earned) ball.
Tyner was saddled with loss for Millsaps and pitched all six innings and gave up 11 hits and five runs (four earned).
Jessica Washington led Berry with three hits, and Boyd, Abbey Daniels and Sara Vigue each had two hits apiece. Katie Birdwell picked up two hits for Millsaps.
In game two, Boyd (6-2) held the Majors hitless through four and two-thirds before Casey Brown successfully bunted for a hit to first. Doles would later drive Brown in with a RBI single, which accounted for Millsaps' lone run of the game.
Berry scored two runs in the second, fourth and sixth innings, and the final two tallies triggered the mercy rule.
Boyd went the distance for Berry, pitching a six-inning two-hitter. She struck out four. Birdwell (2-4) was tagged with the loss for the Majors. She gave up seven hits and three runs (all earned) in three innings.
Shelby Smith had two doubles for Berry, and Courtney Cauthen, Boyd and Washington recorded two hits apiece. Brown and Doles accounted for Millsaps' two base hits.
Berry will hit the road for a four-game series against SAA opponent Hendrix starting on Friday. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Conway, Ark.
