Emory ends volleyball NCAA tournament run, 3-1

Box Score

ATLANTA -- Berry College's historic volleyball season came to an end on Saturday. The No. 7-ranked Emory defeated the Vikings, 3-1, in the second round of the Atlanta Regional on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles raised their record to 32-4 following a 3-1 triumph (25-13, 15-25, 25-20, 25-13) over the Vikings, who finished off their year at 26-8.

Emily Stromberg recorded a match-high 18 kills and hit .317 to lead the Vikings. Senior Stephanie Quinn closed her collegiate career with 30 assists and was named to the Atlanta Regional Tournament Team. Freshman Katie Truluck notched a match-best 26 digs.

"I thought our team played well in sets two and three and had opportunities to gain control of the match, but credit Emory for making fewer mistakes down the stretch," said Berry Head Coach Mika Robinson.

Trailing 1-0, the Vikings regrouped and turned the tables on the Eagles They limited them to a .000 hitting mark in knotting up the contest.

In the third game, a service ace by Cat McGrath gave Emory a 10-5 advantage but Berry rattled off five straight points to tie things up.  A kill by BC's Stromberg gave the visitors a 15-14 lead, but a pair of terminations by freshman Sarah Maher and one by Bowman highlighted a 6-0 Eagle spurt that put them ahead, 20-15.  Berry managed to draw to within two points at 22-20 but Emory closed out the set with three straight points.

The Eagles used that momentum in the fourth game, scoring the first four points and never looking book in closing out the contest.  For the match, Emory finished with a .269 hitting percentage (49-14—130) compared to Berry's .081 (38-27—135).  The Eagles enjoyed edges in both digs (67-59) and blocks (8-5).

McGrath led Emory with 13 kills.

Emory will battle Colorado College (35-4) for the Regional title on Sunday starting at 2:00 pm.  The winner earns the right to advance to the national championships for quarterfinal-round play (Nov. 21) in Holland, Michigan.

"This team has exceeded everyone's expectations except our own, and they have certainly lived up to this year's motto of 'Leave a Legacy'. Every one of these players have invested so much of themselves to help us be successful, and their selfless approach has been the key to our success," Robinson said. "That attitude started with our seniors, and I could not be prouder of the work they have put in over the last four and five years to put this program in this position."
