Box Score

ROME, Ga. – Berry College and Centre College played a competitive match on Saturday at Ford Field. The visiting Colonels netted a second-half goal en-route to the win.

The game was the Southern Athletic Association opener for both clubs. Centre improved to 7-4-1 and 1-0. BC dropped to 7-3 and 0-1.

Lucy Yankello tallied the game's only goal in the 63rd minute. On the play, Viking goalkeeper Melissa Sanchez came off her line to retrieve the ball. Yankello, however, got their first and got behind Sanchez and scored into an open net.

The first half was a defensive battle, but Berry led in shots 4-2.

Kim Fischer recorded a team-high three shots for the home team. Teammate Maggie Midkiff put two shots on goal.

For the entire match, Centre led in shots (10-8) and corner kicks (8-2). Sanchez made six saves and took the defeat. Centre's Holly Hilton stopped four Viking shots and earned the win.

"I told the team before the game that whoever made the fewest mistakes would win, and that's what happened," said Berry Head Coach Lorenzo Canalis. "We proved we could play with one of the top teams, but we need to get results."

Berry travels to SAA foe Hendrix on Friday, Oct. 11 for its next match.
