DECATUR, Ga. – Fueled by goals by three different players, Berry (2-2) defeated Agnes Scott (2-3) by a final score of 4-0 in a late Tuesday afternoon matchup.
Freshman Sara Dillon scored her first career goal at 17:00 on an assist from fellow frosh Becca Proschansky. This ended the team's scoring drought that spanned the course of two games and over 250 minutes of play. Later senior Rachel Czyz scored an unassisted goal at 30:33, which marked her first score since 2009. Czyz missed the majority of 2010 and the entirety of 2011 with an injury.
Leading 2-0 at halftime, Berry tacked on two more goals in less than three minutes, both by senior Alex Garza. Her first score came at 67:03 on an assist by Dillon, and the final one took place at 69:50 on an assist by junior Lindsey Williams.
Berry head coach Lorenzo Canalis cautioned against characterizing this as a lopsided affair.
"We struggled a bit too," Canalis said. "The score was perhaps a little misleading. In terms of play, they were pretty tough so it was a good test for us. For the most part, I'm pretty pleased with the way we played. We moved the ball quite well."
Sophomore Brooke Clement earned the win in goal for Berry as she recorded four saves for her second shutout. Agnes Scott's Ashley Watts was tagged with the loss after allowing two goals and making three saves.
Berry outshot Agnes Scott by a 16-9 margin, which included 11 shots on goal. Czyz, Garza and junior Kim Fischer fired off three shots apiece for Berry. Hallie Bates and Vicky Freyer led Agnes Scott with three shots each.
The next game on Berry's schedule will be a Friday afternoon meeting with Thomas More College in Crestview Hills, Ky., at 4 p.m.
