Men's Soccer Advances to SAA Semifinals

Birmingham, Ala. -- Second-seeded Berry College cruised to a 5-0 win over Sewanee in an SAA quarterfinal match on Friday. David Shaw netted two second-half goals to lead the Viking attack.

Berry's defense produced its  ninth shutout of the season. Logan Hill played the first 76:24 and had two saves. Zachary Wroblewski logged the rest of the time and shared the shutout.

Caleb Lucas scored an unassisted goal in the 13th minute for Berry. Josh Hughes then knocked in a rebound off the post in the 20th minute to make the score 2-0. Leo Gutierrez converted a penalty kick at the 26:00 for the first half's final tally.

Josh Fancher assisted Shaw in the 81st minute. Hughes recorded an assist in 82nd minute on Shaw's second score.

Berry led in shots, 17-6. Sewanee had the edge in corner kicks. Jacob Zalewski had five saves in goal for the Tigers (4-12-3).

The five goal margin was the biggest for the Vikings this year. 

Berry (13-3-1) plays a semifinal match at 3:30 p.m. EST on Saturday against Oglethorpe. The Stormy Petrels upset top seed and tournament host Birmingham-Southern, 3-1.
