ROME, Ga. – Berry and Hendrix played to a 0-0 draw in two overtimes in a Southern Athletic Association match at Ford Field on Sunday.
Berry is now 2-6-1 overall and 0-2-1 in SAA play. Hendrix's record now stands at 4-6-1 and 0-2-1.
Junior Kim Fischer paced Berry with nine shots while Samantha Lallas and Mel Roach had five shots apiece for Hendrix. Junior goalkeeper Blair Shupenko made eight saves for Berry in just her third collegiate start in goal. Her Hendrix counterpart, Rachel Zweig, recorded 12 saves.
The first half saw Berry outshoot Hendrix, 15-4. The second period featured a more even matchup in that category as Berry held the advantage, this time by a 10-7 margin. When the buzzer sounded to signal the end of regulation, the game remained scoreless, forcing overtime.
The first ten-minute overtime period featured only four shots overall, resulting in a second overtime. Neither team would score though, resulting in a tie.
"Today we actually created quite a bit," said Berry Head Coach Lorenzo Canalis. "We took 30 shots. You would think out of that sheer number of shots you would get at least one or two goals. I thought we played a very good first half. And we were an on-and-off in the second half."
Berry will return to action on Tuesday night at Piedmont College in Demorest, Ga., at 7 p.m.
"There are no easy solutions to our season," Canalis said. "We just need to keep working. It just has to be hard work. There are no shortcuts to becoming more competitive.
"We've got everything we need. We've got 24 players; some of them are out with injuries. Well that's to be expected during an athletic season. We just need to do a better job of scoring, and we need to stop giving up cheap goals. We've lost way too many games, 1-0, by giving up second effort goals."
