ROME, Ga. – Freshman Caleb Lucas took a pass from senior Kartee Johnson and notched the decisive score in overtime to lift Berry College over visiting Hendrix, 1-0, on Sunday at Ford Field. The goal was the first collegiate tally for Lucas, who paced Berry with seven shots, including five on goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Logan Hill recorded his sixth shutout for Berry and made four saves. Hendrix keeper Marco Luna took the loss and totaled nine saves. Jacob Pierce led the Warriors with four shots.
Berry's record now stands at 9-3 overall and 2-1 in SAA play. Hendrix is now 8-4-1 and 1-2.
"I think it had been coming," said Berry Head Coach Richard Vardy of the game-winning goal. "We'd been playing pretty well and putting a lot of pressure on them in the second half. We wanted to keep that going in overtime. Having Kartee out there--he's got a lot of pace. He caused some trouble down the right side of the field, fought through a tough tackle, and got a nice cross in. The keeper dropped the ball, and Caleb was in the right place at the right time."
"As I received the ball, I tried to do the best I could and crossed it because I knew that there would be somebody in the box," said Johnson of the final play. "Fortunately for us, Caleb was there and he scored."
The next game for Berry will be on Friday at Ford Field against SAA foe Sewanee at 4 p.m.
