Box Score Berry Tops Lions As David Shaw Scores Pair of Second Half Goals
David Shaw, playing in his first collegiate match, scored a pair of second-half goals as Berry defeated Piedmont 3-1 Saturday at the Piedmont Fall Invitational in Demorest, Ga. The match was the first of the season for the Vikings.
The teams were locked in a 1-1 tie before Shaw collected rebounded save by Piedmont goalkeeper Brian Gaid and fired it into the net to break the deadlock in the 64th minute. Twelve minutes later, Shaw struck again to put the game away.
Berry took its first lead in the 20th minute on a penalty kick from Daniel Wartner, the Vikings' leading returning scorer from a year ago. But the Lions would tie the match with just over four minutes left to play in the first half when Sidney Smith found the net.
That was one of the few chances Piedmont had, as Berry's defense held the Lions to just two shots on goal. The Vikings outshot Piedmont 22-9 overall, and fired 12 shots on goal. Eight of Berry's shots came off the boot of Shaw, including seven shots on goal.
Vikings goalkeeper Kevin Madigan finished with one save.
Berry returns to action Sunday against Oglethorpe in the final match of the Piedmont Fall Invitational. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
