Box Score Three Second-Half Goals Lift Chapman to Win
Chapman University scored three second half goals en route to a 3-0 victory Berry in a men's soccer match in Orange, Calif., Monday evening.
After the teams went into the intermission locked in a scoreless tie, Chapman struck in the first five minutes of the second half, when Mauricio Alfonso scores on an assist from Francesco Onorati.
Both teams played the final half undermanned after red cards were issued to Berry goalkeeper Kevin Madigan and Chapman forward Nick Echiverry with 20 seconds remaining in the first half. A yellow card was issued to Chapman's Colin Heim at the same time.
Heim made the score 2-0 in the 60th minute when he scored off an assist from Brent Hellesen, but following the goal was ejected from the match when he received his second yellow card.
With just five seconds remaining in the match, Hellesen would assist on Chapman's final goal, scored by Nick Velasquez.
With a man advantage and trailing by two goals for the final 30 minutes, Berry was on the offensive for much of that stretch, but was unable to convert.
Chapman outshot Berry 14-11 overall in the contest, but the Vikings held a 9-6 shot advantage in the final 45 minutes.
Daniel Wartner, Zak Wallingford and Josh Hughes led Berry with two shots apiece. Alfonso took five shots for Chapman.
Madigan made four saves during his 44:40 of action. Andrew Ryndak, who played the second half, did not record a save.
Chapman goalkeeper Jimmy Adranly tallied six saves.
Berry is scheduled to return to action Sunday, when it hosts Sewanee at 3 p.m., at Ford Field.
