Dr. Angel Mason was appointed Director of Athletics on June 1, 2019, and completed her 4th overall year in 2022-23.  In her role, she is responsible for the oversight of 22 varsity programs and all athletic department operations. Mason also serves on the President’s cabinet.  In addition, she currently serves as:

  • Board President of the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA)
  • Executive Committee Board member for the Minority Opportunity Athletic Association (MOAA)
  • Member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Executive Committee
  • Chair of the Women of Color Circle for Women Leader in Sports
  • NCAA Technology Committee Chair, Financial & Risk Management Working Group member, and Division III Congressional Advocates member.
The priorities in the athletic department under her leadership have focused on people development, enhancing student experience, and the pursuit of competitive excellence in the classroom and in play. Since her arrival in 2019, Mason has led the Vikings to unprecedented success while guiding the department through a global pandemic.  During the 2021-22 season the Vikings took home the Southern Athletic Association commissioner cup for the first time in program history. Due to her commitment to service and the success of the athletic department, Mason was recognized as the Nike Executive of the Year in 2022.

She previously served as the Senior Associate Athletic Director and SWA for Pomona-Pitzer Athletics, assisting the Sagehen’s athletics director in all day-to-day operations for the Department of Physical Education and Athletics. She assisted in the oversight of 21 varsity sports, compliance, internal operations, department budget and serves as the Deputy Title IX coordinator.

Prior to Pomona-Pitzer she served as the Associate Director of Athletics, SWA and Professor of Physical Education at Hamilton College where she served as a key member of the department’s senior leadership team. Mason was the sport administrator for 16 of the 29 varsity athletic teams, developed a student-athlete leadership academy and served as the administrator for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) among various other responsibilities.  Through the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women’s Internship grant at Vassar College Mason was afforded the opportunity to begin a career in athletics.

Mason graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies and a minor in English from Butler University, where she played basketball for the Division I Bulldogs. She earned her Master of Science in sports management while starting her career at Vassar College.  Additionally, Mason earned a Doctor of Education in Administration, where her research focused on the underrepresentation of African American women in NCAA Division III athletics.
