ROME, Ga. — The Berry College volleyball team, winners of two straight Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championships, announced the team's 2019 schedule on Friday featuring some of the top competition in the nation.
The Vikings are set to face eight teams who closed last season inside or received votes in the final 2018 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25, including the reigning national champion, Emory University, who Berry will play twice in the fall. The Vikings closed last season ranked No. 21 in the poll.
Berry opens the season at the Ithaca Bombers Invitational, taking on the No. 12 host Bombers on August 30.
The team returns home on Sept. 6 to host the highly-anticipated Berry National Invitational. The tournament will run over two days in a dual-court format in Berry's Steven J. Cage Athletics and Recreation Center and feature three top-25 teams including Berry. The full tournament schedule will be released near the start of the season.
The Vikings closed last season with a 26-4 mark and a 13-1 record in league play, winning their second straight SAA regular season and tournament titles. The team hosted the NCAA Regionals and were eliminated in the round of 32. Berry claimed seven All-SAA selections, including a Defensive Player of the Year honor for Laura Beier, a Player of the Year award for Emily Hancock and Caitlyn Moriarty's second-straight Coach of the Year nod. Carson VanCampen went on to claim Berry's first AVCA All-American first-team selection, with Beier and Hancock earning All-America honorable mention.
