BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — With dozens of program and personal records shattered, the Berry College swimming and diving teams return from the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Championships with one of the most successful performances in program history.
Berry's Brooke Boyd was selected as the SAA Newcomer of the Year at the conclusion of the meet, while head coach Paul Flinchbaugh earned the SAA Women's Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year honor.
The women's team earned a third place finish with 658 points, the highest the team has ever placed at the SAA Championships. The final day was highlighted by a first place finish from freshman Brooke Boyd in the 1650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:28.26, improving on her own school record and NCAA B cut by over four seconds. Freshman Sydney Ragsdale then earned a third place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:10.11, improving on her own school record, followed by Cedar Hawks who placed fourth. Haley Brown posted a second place finish in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 51.60, falling only to Becca Erwin of Birmingham-Southern who swam a conference record time of 50.43. Her time also improved on her school record and earned an NCAA B cut.
Josie Hadaway earned yet another medal in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing second with a time of 2:23.76, setting a school record. Boyd earned a fourth place finish with a time of 2:23.77. In the 200-yard butterfly, Sarah Pierce took second with a 2:11.13. The Vikings then took second in the 400-yard freestyle relay made up of Haley Brown, Josie Hadaway, Sarah Pierce and Maggie Hogsed in a school record time of 3:32.34.
On the men's side, the Vikings earned fourth with 503 points. Michael Bemis highlighted the evening, earning first in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 46.38. Freshman Dylan White found his way to the podium in third in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:52.02 before the 400-yard freestyle relay team (Dylan White, Jackson Parker, Mac Stovall, Michael Bemis) earned third with a time of 3:07.11.
Complete honors from the meet including All-Conference honorees will be released in the coming days.
