Three Berry Homers Push Softball Past Centre 8-0 in SAA Tournament

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Vikings hit three fifth-inning home runs, and Kassie Howard allowed just one hit in the circle, as the Berry College softball team defeated Centre College 8-0 in a six inning run-rule victory on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Vikings advance in the SAA winner's bracket. 

Berry takes on Birmingham-Southern at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow in Chattanooga, Tenn. 

The game remained scoreless through three full innings, with the Vikings crossing the plate in the bottom of the fourth. Brittany Tuttle then doubled to left center, and Brooke Whittemore added a sac bunt to move her to third. Tuttle then scored on a wild pitch, giving Berry an early 1-0 lead to open scoring.

Three Vikings then homered in the bottom of the fifth inning to expand the lead to 6-0. Katlin Seger opened up the inning with a two-run homer over the left field wall. Kylie Aiken then added a solo shot in the very next at-bat, and Whittemore rounded out the inning's scoring with a two-run home run of her own over the left field wall.

Four Berry singles to score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning then ensured the 8-0 victory for the Vikings. Berry finished the outing with 11 hits and no errors, while Centre rounded out the day with just one hit and no errors.

Howard (21-1) earned the win in the circle for the Vikings, tossing six full innings, while allowing just one hit, striking out 12 Colonels. Erika Brewer (14-8) took the loss in the circle for Centre, tossing 4.1 innings, while allowing five hits and four earned runs, striking out two Vikings.
