Softball Holds on to Defeat BSC 3-1 on Senior Day

ROME, Ga. – Kylie Aiken and Bayleigh Masterson strung together back-to-back RBI doubles in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Berry College softball team held on to defeat Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Birmingham-Southern College 3-1 in a Senior Day contest on Saturday afternoon.

The win was the second straight for the Vikings, as Berry improved to 26-4 on the season. With the loss, the Panthers fall to 23-11 overall, as well as 10-3 in the SAA.

Birmingham-Southern opened up scoring in the contest, as Kyrstyn Fisher reached first on an error to bring home Haley Crumpton and give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. Masterson then scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the same inning. Aiken and Masterson then rounded out all scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning, hitting back-to-back doubles.

The Panthers threatened in the top of the seventh. With bases loaded and no outs, Howard earned a strikeout before Savannah Lee hit a fly ball to center for the second out. On the same play, Brittany Tuttle threw out the runner attempting to score from third to secure the win.

Kassie (17-1) earned the complete-game win on the mound, allowing six hits and no earned runs, while striking out nine batters in the contest. Birmingham-Southern's Haley Crumpton (20-4) took the loss on the mound for the Panthers, tossing six innings, while allowing six hits and two earned runs, striking out six Vikings.

The Panthers' Abby Spencer led all batters in the contest, as she finished 3-for-3 at the plate on the day for BSC. Aiken and Masterson each added two hits and an RBI for Berry as well, leading the Vikings' offense in the win. Both teams finished the matchup with six hits, while Berry committed two errors on the day as well.

The Vikings will take on the Panthers in a doubleheader to round out the conference series starting tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
