COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The Berry College softball team split its games on Friday at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. The 10th-ranked Vikings lost to #1 Texas Tyler, 7-0, in the opener. In its second contest, BC bested Oneonta State, 9-0, in five innings.
Against the top-ranked Patriots, the Vikes were felled by five unearned runs allowed in the second inning. The defeat halted a 14-game Berry winning streak. Kassie Howard (9-1) started and suffered her first defeat of the year. She allowed seven hits and two earned runs. Marie Collop tossed the final 1 1/3 inning and did not give up a run.
K.K. Stevens broke the game open with a three-run home run in the second inning. Kelsie Batten (9-2) was the winning pitcher for Texas Tyler.
The Patriots (12-2) collected eight hits to Berry's six. Sarah Moore went 2-for-3 to lead BC batters.
In the nightcap, BC plated five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back against Oneonta (2-7). The first inning was highlighted by a grand slam home run from Kylie Aiken (1-for-3, HR, four RBI).
Allie Coronado (5-1) started and earned the win for the Vikings. She tossed a complete-game shutout, allowed three hits and fanned one batter.
Berry (15-3) plays Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday at 10 a.m.
