Softball sweeps Rhodes, 7-3 and 7-6

MEMPHIS, Tenn. –- Berry College swept a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader at Rhodes College on Saturday. The Vikings took game one, 7-3, and won the nightcap in nine innings, 7-6.

BC has now swept three straight road doubleheaders and has won six straight contests. Berry improved to 12-4, 2-0 and RC dropped to 12-8,  1-5.

In the first game, the Vikings knocked 17 hits en route to the win. Berry had four players with three hits: Brittany Ferrell; Abby Daniels; Shelby Smith and Marie Collop. Ferrell had a triple, Daniels knocked a home run and Smith drove in three runners. 

In the pitching circle, freshman Kayla Davis allowed seven hits, walked none and struck out three Lynx. She improved to 5-1. 

The nightcap was a tougher battle. RC tallied in the bottom of the seventh to push the game to extra frames. 

In the top of the ninth, Kenzie Fleming (4-5, two doubles, 2 RBI) drove in Smith who had singled earlier.

Daniels was 3-3, scored runs and had two RBI in the contest. Both Smith and Daniels homered in the game. Ferrell recorded two hits in the game.

Allie Coronado  (4-1) got the win for BC. She stated the game as the flex and then Andrea Cole tossed two frames before Coronado reentered in the bottom of the seventh. For the game, Coronado allowed two runs, seven hits and faced 29 batters.

Berry College travels to play at ninth-ranked Emory University on Wednesday.
