ATLANTA -- Josh Hughes '14c has signed a professional contract with the Atlanta Silverbacks of the North American Soccer League (NASL).
"This was what I worked for my entire soccer career, but not something I always thought I could achieve," said Hughes."I certainly want to thank Gary Smith and the Atlanta Silverbacks for giving me the opportunity to develop in a professional environment."
As a senior in 2013, Hughes was picked to the Southern Athletic Association all-conference team. He led Berry with nine goals and 19 points. The Peachtree City, Ga. native scored an impressive five goals (on five shots) in the first half of a 5-0 win over visiting Birmingham-Southern on Oct 27. Hughes earned the conference's offensive player of the week honor that same week. A midfielder, he helped Berry to a 10-6-2 mark in 2013.
Hughes also became Berry's first student-athlete to earn Capital One Division III Academic All-America honors. He held a perfect 4.0 GPA and majored in biochemistry.
In 2012, he earned SAA First Team honors and helped the Vikings to the SAA Championship.
"Josh was a model student-athlete for 4 years fully deserving all the athletic and academic accolades he received," said Vikings' Head Coach Richard Vardy. "He set his heart on playing soccer beyond college and I could not be happier for him and his very supportive family. On top of his talent, he has worked very hard for this and no one is more deserving. The Silverbacks' coaching staff will love working with Josh and I know he will continue to do well."
The Silverbacks play their next home match on April 25 vs. the New York Cosmos. Hughes is listed as a defender on the club's website at http://www.atlantasilverbacksfc.com
